One of Great Britain’s most talented young athletes Sophie Hitchon (Blackburn Harriers) claimed gold and broke the hammer record on the second day of the Commonwealth Youth Games athletics with a distance of 58.43m.

The North West based athlete, who travelled with the Norwich Union GB&NI team to the IAAF World Junior Championships in July, won the competition with a throw more than seven metres ahead of her nearest rival.

Also in the throws, Curtis Griffith Parker (Cambridge Harriers) won silver for England in the discus with a best effort of 55.35m, behind Australian Julian Wruck with a Games record of 60.88m

Abigail Irozuru (Sale Harriers) won the women’s long jump in fine form. Her winning effort of 5.92m (+0.9) sees her retain top spot in the U20 McCain Power of Ten rankings, well worthy of her gold medal.

Hannah Lewis (North Down AC) claimed the first athletics silver for Northern Ireland. Her winning jump of 5.85m (+0.3) was also a personal best, leaving her fourth on the U20 McCain Power of Ten rankings.

Top junior athlete Jordan McGrath (Birchfield Harriers) secured a bronze medal in the final of the men’s 400m final just months after helping to secure silver in the 4 x400m relay at the World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

McGrath, who is one of six athletes on the UK Athletics Heroes project sponsored by Original Source, crossed the line in 47.26.
