Morgan Lake (coach: Eldon Lake) was presented with the coveted SportsAid One-to-Watch Award at the charity’s Sports Ball in London last night.

The double IAAF world junior champion was chosen ahead of more than 1300 other rising stars of British sport who have been supported by the SportsAid charity in 2014. All of these athletes were nominated by their sport’s governing body on the strength of their talent and potential, and this is why the one-to-watch award has gained a reputation for highlighting the very best of the next generation of athletes in this country.

The seventeen-year old has enjoyed an incredible 2014 where she won gold medals in the high jump and the heptathlon at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene. In the process, she broke the UK-all time junior record for the high jump recording a jump of 1.94m, and set a new personal best in the heptathlon to go second behind Katarina Johnson-Thompson on the UK junior all-time list with 6148 points.

In addition, Lake translated her great junior form into a call-up to her first senior Great Britain & Northern Ireland team at the European Championships in Zurich. The WSEH athlete competed in the high jump in Switzerland to gain valuable experience for the years ahead.

In 2015, Lake will aim for more success at the European Junior Championships in Eskilstuna, Sweden and the World Championships in Beijing, China. After years of support from the British Athletics Futures Programme, she will receive World Class Performance Programme (WCCP) Podium Potential funding in 2014/15 to help her achieve her goals in the year ahead.

On receiving the award she said, “I am absolutely honoured to be SportsAid’s one to watch. The award is the icing on the cake of an amazing year and it’s really nice to have the backing and support.”

A panel of judges from Sport England, UK Sport, the English Institute of Sport, BBC Sport and SportsAid chose Lake ahead of two other one-to-watch award finalists – junior taekwondo world champion Abigail Stones, and double IPC European Champion and world record holder Maria Lyle.
