MORGAN WINS WORLD MOUNTAIN RUNNING TITLE

Charlotte Morgan claimed the women’s title at the World Long Distance Mountain Running championships as well as guiding the women to team silver in Karpacz, Poland.

Morgan – from Carnethy Hill Racing Club in Scotland – won it by just over twenty seconds after completing the challenging 32.2km rocky course in 3:08.24 ahead of home favourite, Dominika Stelmach.

Following in the footsteps of Annie Conway who won the title in 2016 for the British team, Morgan battled hard to earn her maiden world title.

Victoria Wilkinson (Bingley Harriers) backed up her fine form in recent months, placing fifth overall. At the halfway mark, she was second narrowly behind her teammate, but a tough second half of the race combined with the strength of the challengers meant she just missed out on a podium place despite a valiant effort.

Nichola Jackson (Chris Barnes, Ribble Valley Harriers)was 24th in 3:30.40, and with the top three places counting towards the overall score, the women claimed the team silver.

Holly Rush (Alan Storey, Avon Valley) followed closely behind 3:33.14 in 27th with Georgia Tindley (Hunter’s Bog Trotters) just one position further back in 3:33.38.

In the men’s event, there was a top ten finish for Murray Strain (Hunter’s Bog Trotters), the Scot working hard over the Polish mountains for eighth position in a time of 2:46.30.

Tom Evans (Allison Benton, Lewes AC / Army AA) was a further five minutes behind Strain in 20th place with compatriot Ricky Lightfoot (Ellenborough) one place further back.

William Neill (John Danahay, City of Stoke) was 28th with Jack Wood (Ilkley) in 35th to complete the British men’s results.
