MUIR BREAKS HER OWN SCOTTISH INDOOR 800M RECORD AS BRITS IMPRESS IN TORUN

Laura Muir (coach: Andy Young; club: Dundee Hawkhill) produced an indoor personal best 800m performance and broke her own Scottish record as she took a second place finish in the IAAF World Indoor Tour meeting in Torun.

Chasing down Jenny Meadows’ British record of 1:58.43, the Scot slowly moved up the field lap-by-lap to be within a whisker of winner Habitam Alemu (ETH) but could not do enough to get the better of her counterpart in the final 50 metres, clocking 1:59.50 for second, with Alemu 0.01s ahead of her.

Muir’s time also improved her previous Scottish indoor best of 1:59.69, set last year at the Scottish Championships in Glasgow, and is the fourth fastest by a Brit over the distance in history.

She was one of five British in action in the Polish city, with Imani-Lara Lansiquot (Steve Fudge; Sutton & District) finishing just 0.02s outside of her 60m personal best as she clocked 7.23s to come home third in Torun.

Home favourite and world leader Ewa Swoboda (POL) took victory in 7.15s, with Marie-Josée Ta Lou a shade behind in 7.16s. Lansiquot’s fellow Brit Bianca Williams (Lloyd Cowan; Enfield & Haringey) brought her season’s best down to 7.42s, but failed to progress from her heat, finishing fourth.

Elliot Giles (Jon Bigg; Birchfield Harriers) clocked a season’s best 1:48.22 as he finished the men’s 800m in fourth place, American Erik Sowinski took victory in 1:47.49.

Giles, who will be racing the 1500m at the British Championships this weekend, ran a good race through the first 400m and was up on the shoulders of the leader, but faded away on the third lap as the pace increased.

Miguel Perera (Jerzy Maciukiewicz; Harrow AC) did not have the rub of the green that his fellow Brits enjoyed as he failed to progress out of his heat in the 60m hurdles, finishing sixth in his pool in 7.98s.
