Laura Muir (coach: Andy Young) continued her strong start to the season at the Oslo Diamond League last night, setting a new Scottish mile record of 4:19.12 to put her second on the British all-time list behind Zola Budd.

With fellow Brit Jenny Meadows (Trevor Painter) as pacemaker, the 23-year-old from Kinross finished second behind Kenyan Faith Kipyegon, breaking Yvonne Murray’s Scottish mile record of 4.22.60 – which had stood for 22 years.

Muir, who finished fifth in last year’s World Championships and now holds the Scottish 1500m and mile records, said afterwards “I’m delighted with my run tonight in Oslo and to break the Scottish Record over the mile.  Big thanks to Jenny Meadows for perfect pacing, she did an amazing job.”

In the men’s equivalent Dream Mile race, fellow Brit Charlie Grice (Jon Bigg) finished sixth clocking his second fastest time ever of 3:52.85.

Out in the field, Britain’s 27-year-old Shara Proctor (Rana Reider), who won silver at last year’s world championships, produced a season’s best of 6.67m to finish third in the long jump, behind Canada’s Christabel Nettey and winner Ivana Spanovic of Serbia. 

In the discus Jade Lally (Andrew Neal) was sixth with 59.56m after a last-minute decision to compete in Norway.

Both finishing fourth, compatriots Anyika Onuora (Reider) ran 51.85 in the 400m and Tiffany Porter (Reider) clocked 12.94 in the 100m hurdles.  Jodie Williams (Ryan Freckleton) ran 23.29 in the 200m, to finish in sixth spot.

In the pre-programme 1500m, Jake Wightman (Geoff Wightman) ran 3:38.83 for third place, with fellow Brit Tom Lancashire (Steve Vernon) finishing seventh in 3:41.46.
