With the World Para Athletics Championships less than two weeks away, the British Athletics Parallel Success event in Newham served as the perfect final competitive outing before the competition begins at the nearby London Stadium.

In the first track race of the day, Hannah Cockroft (coach: Jenni Banks) showed she is in superb form ahead of the worlds by winning the 100m in a world record time of 17.25 (+1.7). After setting a previous best of 17.28 in Arbon at the end of May, her time in Newham was further proof that she will be a formidable force at this summer’s championships.

She was followed by compatriot Kare Adenegan (Job King) who clocked a massive personal best time of 17.79, taking it down from her previous best of17.97, whilst Carly Tait (Banks) also lowered her lifetime best to 19.05 in a successful event for the Brits.

There was a personal best for David Henson in the T42 200m, with his time of 24.25 (+1.2) taking a significant chunk off his previous best, just under half a second. Also in the race, T37 sprinter Rhys Jones (Christian Malcolm) was also in fantastic form over the 200m distance, also setting his fastest ever time with 24.28.

There were a host of global medallists in the women’s ambulant 100m, with T47 athlete Polly Maton (Colin Baross) equalling her personal best of 12.77 (+1.9) to take the overall victory in the mixed class event. Olivia Breen (Aston Moore) (T38) was close to her lifetime best with a 13.32 time, another sign of consistency from the Loughborough-based athlete.

Double Paralympic champion Georgie Hermitage (Paul McGregor) (T37) saw further improvement after her first track race in May, crossing the line in 13.47. T44 athlete Laura Sugar (Femi Akinsanya) was 0.01 further back whilst triple world and Paralympic T35 medallist Maria Lyle (Ryan Freckleton) clocked 14.42 and 29.67 in the 200m, albeit the latter a wind-assisted time. The 200m was won by Sophie Hahn (Joe McDonnell) 26.58 (+2.9) as the wind continued to swirl around the Newham track.

Kylie Grimes (Philip Peat) achieved another high 19 metre throw in the F51 club throw which will give her a boost of confidence, whilst Vanessa Wallace (Alison O’Riordan) was a matter of centimetres of her personal best in the F34 shot put.
