Norwich Union GB&NI Team Update: Kwakye In 100m And Freeman In 200m

UK Athletics today called-up Emily Freeman (Wakefield Harriers) for the 200m and switched Jeanette Kwakye (Woodford Green and Essex Ladies) from the longer sprint to the 100m for the IAAF World Championships, which begin on Saturday 25 August in Osaka, Japan.

The change came about after Laura Turner (Harrow) ran a blistering World Championship A qualifying standard at the L.E.A.P meeting at the weekend – clocking 11.19 seconds in the 100m.

With two GB&NI athletes – Turner and Montell Douglas (Blackheath & Bromley) – now having the 100m A standard, under IAAF rules Kwakye can run over her favoured distance.

Freeman, who was named as travelling reserve for the 200m as well as being in the 4x100m squad, replaces Kwakye in the longer sprint

UK Performance Director, Dave Collins said:

“Laura’s excellent run at the weekend enables us to allow for athlete’s preferred events and to offer another athlete a slot in an individual event, both as preparation and as a race in itself”

The full team for the women’s sprints is now:

Montell Douglas (Blackheath & Bromley)

Jeanette Kwakye (Woodford Green & Essex Ladies)

Laura Turner (Harrow)
