The finale of the Norwich Union sports:hall season took place at the NEC, Birmingham on Saturday 12 April, to decide the winners of the Under 15 All Rounder competition and Under 13 Team Challenge.

Cheered on by European Indoor Silver medallist Nathan Douglas, who enjoyed taking part in Sportshall athletics from the age of 11 for Oxfordshire, the athletes were competing at the 25th UK Final.

The programme was unfortunately affected by the cancellation of the track events, after some athletes slipped on the floor. The Event Team then had no choice but to deem the track surface unsafe for competition and the focus shifted to the field events.

Abby Sandford (Dorset) was delighted to win the Girls All Rounder competition, ahead of Norfolk’s Laura Green and Yasmin Spencer (Derbyshire) took third place. Derbyshire’s girls secured the team honours, ahead of Birmingham and Dorset.

In the Boys competition, Ciaran Dolan (Fermanagh) lifted the trophy and celebrated his team’s unexpected triumph ahead of strong teams from Birmingham, Warwickshire and Essex. The second placed individual was Adam Carpenter (Dorset) and Ryan Stride (Birmingham) was third.

Fermanagh Team Manager Francis Shaw said:

“It is a rare opportunity for us to win a UK title. Fermanagh is such a small rural area and it was unique for us to have such a talented group of athletes. Many of them were in the team that placed third as Under 13s a few years ago.

A strong Birmingham contingent won the Under 13 team challenge, for boys and girls.
