Peacock Wins In Brussels

11 September 2015

A number of British athletes were in action at the final IAAF Diamond League of the season in Brussels this evening.

In the T44 100m Jonnie Peacock (coach: Steve Fudge) was victorious in a race that saw his arch rival Richard Browne disqualified for a false start. Peacock kept his composure to win the race in 10.99 setting him up well for next month’s IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha where he will be looking to retain his world title.

Tom Lancashire (Steve Vernon) showed great strength to finish in fourth place in the men’s 1500m in a season’s best of 3:38.02. In a race won by France’s Morhad Amdouni, it was a gutsy run from Lancashire to finish just outside the top three at the Memorial Van Damme. Chris O’Hare (Terrence Mahon) and Dale Clutterbuck were 10th and 11th respectively.

After first time clearances at 1.80m, 1.85m and 1.90m, Isobel Pooley (Fuzz Ahmed) bowed out of the competition at 1.93m to finish in fourth place. Also in fourth place was Tiffany Porter (Rana Reider) in the 100m hurdles clocking 12.81, with Dawn Harper-Nelson wrapping up the Diamond Race title with victory in 12.63.

Running from lane one in the 200m, Jodie Williams (Christine Bowmaker) crossed the line in 23.34 for seventh in a race which saw world 200m champion Dafne Schippers take the scalp of Olympic 200m champion Allyson Felix in 22.12.

In the men’s 100m, it was eighth place for Chijindu Ujah (Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) with the sprinting finishing eighth in 10.19. It will be a quick turnaround for the world semi-finalist as he gets on the plane from Brussels to compete at the Great North CityGames.

Some of the highlights away from the British contingent were Renaud Lavillenie avenging his defeat at the IAAF World Championships with a 5.95m clearance and victory in the pole vault, while Tunisia’s Habiba Ghribi recorded the second fastest time in the 3000m steeplechase of all time (9:05.36).
