Preparations Made For Scottish Success

35 Scottish athletes are to be supported through to Commonwealth Games and Youth Games and World Mountain Running Trophy.

Further to UK Athletics’ announcement detailing the athletes who will receive National Lottery funding during 2008 across all levels of the World Class Programme – including thirteen Scots – thirty-five Scottish athletes have been selected for programme support with a focus on individual and team success at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games, 2010 Commonwealth Games and annual World Mountain Running Trophy (WMRT) in a scottishathletics managed initiative.

Nigel Hetherington, Performance Development Manager said: "The commitment to improvement from both athletes and coaches in the first year of the Scotland CWG and WMRT programmes has been generally very good. Inevitably some haven’t made it, however, these Scottish programmes are not safety nets and it is imperative that athletes of this calibre take responsibility for creating and maintaining the right environment for their continued development.

Athletes are selected or deselected to the programme on individual merit against known and agreed criteria. The determination shown by new programme additions to make the grade means that we have taken on seven new exciting 2010 prospects from the end of season review."
