RABAT DIAMOND LEAGUE ROUND-UP

Ten Britons were in action at the Rabat Diamond League in Morocco yesterday evening, with a few athletes claiming European standards in their races.

After her stunning run of form, Dina Asher-Smith (coach: John Blackie) raced over her first 200m on the Diamond League circuit this season after her heroics over 100m so far this campaign. She placed second in 22.40 (-0.5) behind Commonwealth champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo (BAH) who set meeting record of 22.29. Compatriot Jodie Williams was sixth in 23.26.

Meanwhile, Charles Da’Vall Grice (Jon Bigg) went to the top of the 2018 UK rankings over 1500m with a sterling performance in North Africa. In a very fast race, it was a season’s best of 3:34.20 for fifth position. It also doubled as a standard for the European Championships, the first Briton to go under 3:35 in 2018. The race was won by Morocco’s Brahim Kaazouzi in 3:33.22, much to the delight of the home crowd.

In the women’s 800m, Lynsey Sharp (Terrence Mahon) dipped under the two-minute barrier for the second time this season, clocking 1:59.86 in a race was won by Francine Niyonsaba (BRN) in 1:57.90.

There was a third place for Matthew Hudson-Smith (Lance Braumann) in the 400m, recording a time of 44.79, while Morgan Lake (Fuzz Caan) was fifth in the high jump, clearing 1.90m. There was a shock in that competition as Mariya Lasitskene lost for the first time in 45 events, that’s two years; Bulgaria’s Mirela Demireva taking the win.

It was a rapid 100m race in which the three American’s Christian Coleman, Ronnie Baker and Noah Lyles all went sub-10, with the British athletes Reece Prescod (Jonas Dodoo) and CJ Ujah (Stuart McMillan), fourth and fifth respectively in 10.09 and 10.19 (-0.4 m/s).

There was a season’s best for Eilish McColgan (Liz Nuttall) – 14.52.83 – over 5000m as she battled hard to come through for seventh place. Steph Twell (Geoff Wightman) was 12th in 15:36.45.
