Rooney Misses Trials

06 July 2009

Olympic 400m finalist Martyn Rooney has withdrawn from next weekend’s Aviva UK Championships and World Trials in Birmingham as a precautionary measure.

The 22 year old made his first appearance of the summer when finishing second to GB & NI team-mate Robert Tobin with a fine opener of 45.35 last week in Switzerland, but has since had a scan which has discovered some minor fibre tears in his hamstring. It is a separate injury to the one which has delayed his season.

Instead the Croydon-born athlete hopes to be fit for the Aviva London Grand Prix at nearby Crystal Palace on 24-25 July where he will hope to impress selectors ahead of the meeting to determine who will represent GB & NI at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin on 15-23 August.
