13 June 2008

Martyn Rooney (Croydon Harriers) and Christine Ohuruogu (Newham & Essex Beagles) continued their early summer season in great form with wins in the men’s and women’s 400m at the Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava on Thursday night.

In her first 400m race of the season Ohuruogu ran 51.06, taking her to the top of the Power of 10 rankings. Rooney clocked 45.32, enough to win the men’s race but not to challenge his new personal best of 45.19, which he set at the end of May in Geneva.

A number of Britain’s top athletes took to the track in Ostrava, opting for the high standards and hot climates of International competition to preapre for a tough summer.

Mo Farah (Newham and Essex Beagles) competed in his first 5k track event of the year crossing the line in 13.25:01, Jemma Simpson (Newquay & Par AC) came fourth in the 800m with her fastest time this year of 2:00:56. Great Britain teammate Marilyn Okoro (Shaftsbury Barnet Harriers) came eighth in the same race with a credible time of 2:01:46.

Goldie Sayers (Belgrave Harriers) finished fourth in javelin with her second furthest throw of the season of 63.66m.
