Meanwhile, in Sheffield this weekend heptathlete Jessica Ennis (Sheffield) gave her Beijing Olympic hopes an early boost with her furthest-yet javelin throw in her first competition of the outdoor season.

Proving that winter training with former international Mick Hill is paying off, the European Cup combined events champion reached 40.06m at a meeting in her home city of Sheffield, almost two metres further than her previous best.

Coach Toni Minichiello, said: “It was bitterly cold but Jess showed that all her hard work is taking her in the right direction.

"I’m off to find a bookie to put a bob each way on her for Beijing now,” he joked. “Fingers crossed, she’s got to be a good outside bet for the Olympics, particularly with Carolina Kluft deciding not to defend the title.”
