Sayers Targets Title

23 June 2010

British javelin record holder Goldie Sayers will be going for her eighth consecutive National title when she competes at the Aviva European Trials and UK Championships at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, on 25-27 June.

Sayers will be making history if she claims her eighth National title as an eighth successive win in the same event would be a unique achievement in the 130 year history of the UK Championships.

The Loughborough based athlete first became the National record holder in 2007 with a throw of 65.05m. She has since increased that to 65.75m, a distance she achieved in the final at the Beijing Olympics where she finished in fourth place.

After an injury plagued 2009, the seven-time National champion looks to be returning to World class form with a recent 63.15m throw in Bedford on 30 May. At the European Team Championships in Bergen last weekend she finished a fine second ahead of the World leader this year in tough weather conditions, suggesting that a podium finish at the forthcoming Spar European Championships is well within her reach.

She said: “I’m really looking forward to competing at the Aviva European Trials and UK Championships in Birmingham. It would be absolutely fantastic to get my eighth National title, especially as no one has done it before in any event at the Aviva UK Championships! It would give me a fantastic boost and really set me up for the European Championships.”

“The European Championships are the main focus for me this year as I’m hoping to medal. Training has been going really well and I feel like I’m back to my best after a disappointing 2009 due to injury.

“I can’t wait to get out there on the field and defend my National title and the crowd is always brilliant in Birmingham. They’re really in to their athletics and are so supportive, cheering you on from start to finish – it’s a great atmosphere!”
