Scotland Team For Sainsbury's Glasgow International Match Announced
22 December 2014
The bulk of the Scotland team for the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match on Saturday 24 January has been announced.
Nine Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games representatives are already confirmed as competing against athletes from Great Britain & Northern Ireland, Germany and France at the Emirates Arena next month.
Guy Learmonth (coach: George Gandy), who took victory over 600m against a strong field in 2014, will look to continue his progression in Glasgow and replicate the success of his compatriot Chris O’Hare (Terrence Mahon), who used 1500m victory at the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match last year as a springboard towards European Championships bronze in Zurich last summer.
Jamie Bowie (Piotr Haczek), who finished third in the 400m at the 2014 Match, will return to the Scottish team in the same event this time around.
Rodger Harkins, scottishathletics Director of Coaching, said: “Firstly, let me congratulate all the athletes, and their families and coaches, on Scotland selection for the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match. It should always be an honour to wear the Scotland vest.
“There are one or two who missed out on the Commonwealth Games who will see what it took last summer to qualify and will be starting to think about Gold Coast 2018.
“It is a chance for them, and indeed all the athletes, to push themselves forward. I am hoping that we will see some good signs of individual development.
“For the athletics public in Scotland, I think it is a good opportunity to see people they know from our clubs and from National events competing in an International context. That should be exciting as we take on three strong countries in GB & NI, France and Germany.”
