World Junior 100m champion Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Sutton and District AC) is rethinking his competitive plans for this summer after suffering a back injury in training.

He has returned early from warm weather training in the USA with his coach, Matt Favier, and is receiving treatment in London.

“I could be in for the same kind of season as last year,” said 18-year-old Aikines-Aryeetey. With help from the medical team provided by UK Athletics, he managed an injury so successfully that he won his World Junior title in Beijing despite not being able to compete as frequently as initially planned.

He has always said that his main target this summer would be the European Junior Championships in Hengelo, Netherlands, on 19-22 July.

Martin Rush, the Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland Junior Team Leader, said: “While the injury may affect Harry’s immediate goals, he remains focussed on his long-term development – and so do we. The aim of the UKA Performance Department and Harry’s individual team is to ensure that his progress and pathway to senior success is maintained.”
