SPAR BRITISH ATHLETICS INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS: 50 DAYS TO GO

There are now just 50 days to go until the SPAR British Athletics Championships, and with the carrot of representing Great Britain & Northern Ireland at another major championship on home soil in the offering, the excitement from athletes and fans alike continues to build.

Being held at the Arena Birmingham, Birmingham for the second consecutive year following years spent out of Sheffield’s EIS, the SPAR British Athletics Championships will see over 300 athletes compete over two days of jam-packed action in the Second City.

A weekend that sees the very best in Britain line up alongside many athletes cutting their teeth on the major domestic stage for the first time, 2019’s championships will take place on 9-10 February and see over 25 British champions crowned from events stretching from the 60m sprint to the 5000m race walks and pole vault.

Serving as added motivation, and on the back of unforgettable home championships in the IAAF World Championships London 2017, World Para Athletics Championships London 2017 and IAAF World Indoor Championships Birmingham 2018, the championships will also serve as the trials ahead of Glasgow’s European Indoor Championships (March 1-3).

Among those to reveal they are targeting making what could well be a very strong British team for the championships are reigning European Indoor 60m champions Asha Philip (coach: Steve Fudge, club: Newham & Essex Beagles) and Richard Kilty (Benke Blomkvist, Middlesborough), Olympic 6th placer Andrew Butchart (Terrance Mahon, Central AC) and Commonwealth high jump silver medallist Morgan Lake (Fuzz Caan, Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow).

Alongside Butchart, the Scots look sure to be out in force for both the SPAR British Athletics and the European Indoor Championships (pending securing qualification), with the likes of Laura Muir (Andy Young, Dundee Hawkhill), Eilish McColgan (Liz Nuttall, Dundee Hawkhill), Eilidh Doyle (Brian Doyle, Pitreavie), Jemma Reekie (Andy Young, Kilbarchan) and Beth Dobbin (Leon Baptiste, Edinburgh AC) all among those targeting team spots.
