Sprint hurdler Andrew Pozzi (coach: Santiago Antunez, club: Stratford-upon-Avon) has confirmed that he will be returning to the Arena Birmingham in February, to compete at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Birmingham.

The Stratford-Upon-Avon runner will be competing on Saturday 16th February at the Arena Birmingham, returning to the scene of his 2018 World Indoor 60m hurdles title earlier this year.

The Müller Indoor Grand Prix Birmingham is the world’s number one ranked indoor athletics event and Pozzi will be just one of many world leading athletics stars that fans will get the chance to see go head to head at Arena Birmingham.

Pozzi has an outstanding indoor record, in 2017 claiming the European Indoor title and in March 2018 winning gold at the IAAF World Indoor Championships, also at the Arena Birmingham. It was at the very same meeting back in 2017 that the now 26-year-old ran a personal best time of 7.43s to take victory against a stacked international field.

Having recently relocated to Formia, Italy with a new training group, the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Birmingham will play a key part in Pozzi’s 2019 season, with the meeting in Birmingham set to serve as a world-class test ahead of the 26-year-old looking to defend his European Indoor title.

Looking ahead to his return to Birmingham for the Muller Indoor Grand Prix Birmingham, Andy Pozzi said:

“Winning gold at the World Indoors last year was the highlight of my career, and I couldn’t have imagined doing it at a better venue, in front of my home crowd.

“I know that I need a strong start to the year again in 2019, with the Müller Indoor Grand Prix the ideal way to kick off my year. I will be against some of the best sprint hurdlers in the world which will be tough but I am confident that the home crowd will spur me on and it will be the fantastic event it always is.

“As a pairing, I have amazing memories of both the Muller Indoor Grand Prix as a meeting and the Arena Birmingham as venue, so to have the two things come together once again for next February’s event will hopefully serve to set me up to run really well against some of the best guys in the world.”

“I have a busy winter ahead of me training in a new, exciting environment to be ready for a long 2019, but preparations are going well and I know that 2019 needs to be my year, so I am ready to give it my all and give the British crowds something to cheer about.”

The Müller Indoor Grand Prix has seen some memorable and famous performances in recent years from British stars such as Sir Mo Farah, Dina Asher-Smith, Laura Muir and Pozzi himself, with the prospect of more memorable world-class moments in February to come for the Birmingham crowds.

Major Events Director for British Athletics, Cherry Alexander said:

“February will see the best indoor meeting in the world, with the best athletes in the world, competing in the home of athletics in the UK. The popularity of the event is highlighted by the incredible amount of tickets sold already, and I encourage anyone still thinking about buying tickets to do so as quickly as possible before it’s too late.

“It’s very exciting to see British talent leading the way and competing again the leading global athletics stars in Birmingham, like Andy Pozzi, who has shown spectacular form indoors over recent years so we can’t wait to see what he will deliver against a strong field in February.”
