Steele Sharp Again In Spain

In-form Andrew Steele (Trafford AC) scored his fourth successive 400m victory on mainland Europe at the Andalucia Grand Prix at Herrera, Spain, on Saturday night, 19 May.

A week after going to the top of this season’s Power of 10 rankings by winning in 45.75 seconds in Italy, Steele romped home in the European AA Permit meeting in 46.76, a fifth of a second ahead of the runner-up, Carlos Santa (Dominican Republic).

Steele, who ended last summer with wins in Belgium and Germany, will be disappointed with his latest winning time. He gave up a chance to run at tomorrow’s Loughborough International in the hope of a faster race in Spain, but the conditions were not as favourable as he had hoped.

The Power of 10’s current No.1 in the women’s 800m, Marilyn Okoro (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers), was second in her Andalucia race in 2:02.47, only 0.23sec behind Olympic silver medallist Hasna Benhassi (Morocco).
