Stockholm Diamond League

16 June 2016

No less than 14 Britons are in action in this evening’s Stockholm Diamond League meeting, including world long jump silver medallist Shara Proctor (coach: Rana Reider) and Dina Asher-Smith (John Blackie), who is the British record holder over 100m and 200m.

Stockholm’s illustrious Olympic Stadium will see Proctor come up against current Diamond Race leader Ivana Spanovic (SER) and reigning Olympic champion Brittney Reese (USA). Proctor out-jumped Spanovic to claim silver at 2015’s World Championships and will be hoping for a repeat result in the Swedish capital.

With attention turning to the British Championships at the end of the month, Olympic hopeful Asher Smith will look to build on an impressive start to her outdoor season with victory in the 200m. The 20 year old holds the quickest personal best in the field but will face stern competition from compatriots Desiree Henry (Rana Reider) and Margaret Adeoye (Linford Christie).

Fresh from revising her personal best in Geneva on the weekend, Seren Bundy-Davies (Stephen Ball) will take on British champion Anyika Onuora (Rana Reider) and European Junior champion Laviai Nielsen (Frank Adams) in the women’s 400m.

The women’s 800m, a non-Diamond League event, will see Leeds-based athlete Alexandra Bell (Aaron Thomas) aiming for another lifetime best, having recorded a time of 2:01.32 at the BMC Grand Prix in Watford last month.

In the men’s 100m, British hopes will be led by 2014 World Indoor gold medallist Richard Kilty (Benke Blomkvist) and Andrew Robertson (Daniel Cossins), who won Commonwealth Games 4x100m silver two years ago in Glasgow.

The women’s discus will see the in-form Jade Lally (Andrew Neal) look to go better than her sixth place finish in Oslo earlier this month and will come up against Denia Caballero (CUB) and Sandra Perkovic (CRO), who won the two major medals at last summer’s IAAF World Championships in Beijing.

European Indoor 800m bronze medallist Mukhtar Mohammed will pace-make for a stacked 5000m field which includes world leader Muktar Edris (ETH), 2011 world 10,000m champion Ibrahim Jelian (ETH) and World Indoor 3000m gold medallist Yomif Kejelcha (ETH).

Fresh from breaking the Scottish 1-mile record at Oslo’s Diamond League, Laura Muir (Andy Young) will hope the Swedish capital yields an equally strong result in the 1500m. Joining Muir in the penultimate event of the evening will be Leeds-based athlete Laura Weightman (Steve Cram), who clocked 4:03.04 at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene last month.

Other international highlights include: David Rudisha (800m), Christian Taylor (triple-jump), Kendra Harrison (100m hurdles), Keshorn Walcott, Thomas Rohler (both javelin) and Renaud Lavillenie (pole vault).

The Stockholm Diamond League is live on Eurosport 2 from 19:00 this evening. You can also watch highlights on BBC One on Saturday from 12:10.
