Stockholm To Provide Warm-up For Sainsbury's Birmingham GP

21 August 2014

Ahead of a 100m showdown at the Sainsbury’s Birmingham Grand Prix on Sunday, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Rana Reider) and Chijindu Ujah (Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) will take on a stellar field at the famous DN Galan Meeting on Thursday night.

Aikines-Aryeetey heads to Stockholm off the back of his most successful senior championships to date, thanks to winning European gold and bronze in Zurich last week. Third in 100m behind teammate James Dasaolu (Steve Fudge) and Christophe Lemaitre, the former IAAF World Junior champion finally fulfilled the promise he showed as a junior. He then went on to run a great relay leg, which saw the team win gold in spectacular fashion with a 37.93 clocking.

For Ujah, this will be his first major competitive outing since running 10.13 at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games last month. He has however posted a 20.63 time with a rare run out over 200m and will now look to recapture his sub 10 second form.

After the best two weeks of her life, Laura Weightman (Steve Cram) will jump straight back into action in a world class 1500m field. After winning silver at the Commonwealth Games, Weightman looked like a new athlete, oozing confidence as she ran a brave race to bag European Championship bronze in Zurich. If she is fully recovered from her recent medal winning exertions, expect her to challenge the four minute barrier.

Joining Weightman in the 1500m will be Laura Muir (Andy Young), who ran 4.00.07 at the Paris Diamond League six weeks ago. After being tripped with 100m to go at Glasgow 2014, Muir will be hoping to bounce back with another world class performance.
