Jonnie Peacock (coach: Steve Fudge) was just one of last summer’s heroes to star at the Sainsbury’s IPC Athletics Grand Prix Final today.

Peacock blocked the disqualification of American David Prince out of his mind to record a stunning 10.90 victory. The 20 year old left the rest of the field in his wake to miss his own world record by just five hundredths of a second, a performance that earned him the Sainsbury’s performance of the day.

After the race he commented: “I’m pretty happy. Five months of training and I can come up with that, so there’s not really much to complain about. I think I’m in good form for Lyon but we’re working on my starts, so I get better and better.”

Double world and Paralympic 100m and 200m champion Hannah Cockroft (Jenni Banks) continued her impressive form in 2013, as she stormed to comfortable victory in the T33/34 200m posting a time of 32.19.

“It’s not a fantastic time but I won it, so I’m happy. I wasn’t expecting anything amazing here; it’s not the fastest track. I’m feeling really good ahead of Lyon but we’ll just see what happens out there. As long as I win, I’m happy,” said Cockroft, who will now go on to defend her world titles at the IPC Athletics World Championships next month.

Six-time Paralympic champion David Weir (Jenny Archer) couldn’t quite recreate the form he showed in London last year, as he was beaten by Marcel Hug in the T54 1500m.  The 34 year old couldn’t quite close the gap in on the Swiss athlete, who Weir beat into second place in the 800m and marathon at last summer’s Paralympic Games. 

“I felt ok. I just clipped his (Hug’s) wheel on the final back straight but that’s just where I haven’t done a lot of track work. It was a bit of a slow, tactical race but I was ok with that. It was great to see all the support out here and I’m glad to do my bit.”

There was also a victory for 17 year old Sophie Kamlish (Rob Ellchuk), who finished strongly in the T43-46 100m to clock a time of 13.56 – a time that would have been a British record were it not for a +2.1 following wind. Laura Sugar (Hayley Ginn) and Sally Brown (Philip Tweedy) followed Kamlish home in third and fourth places respectively.

Bethany Woodward (Jared Deacon), who won T37 200m silver at London 2012 was also in great form approaching the IPC World Athletics Championships, taking the victory in a time of 30.53 to see off her 4x100m teammate Katrina Hart (Ellchuk), who finished in second place.

Paul Blake (Ellchuk) a double medallist at London 2012 recorded a personal best in the T36/37 800m as he finished fourth in a time of 2:06.39.

Stephen Miller (Rosalynd Miller) won the men’s F32/51 club throw with a final round throw of 28.78m, beating American Kevin Stokes into second place.

There was disappointment for Paralympic 200m champion Richard Whitehead (Keith Antoine) who was disqualified for a false start. However, the T42 100m world record holder was in a positive mood as he left the track.

“It’s just one of those things that happens, it’s just a little bit frustrating. I’m in really good shape and I think I could have done a low 24 seconds today, but you learn from those mistakes, move on and not dwell on it,” said Whitehead.

The men’s F41 Javelin started proceedings at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium and GB & NI’s Kyron Duke (Anthony Hughes) put in a good performance throwing 36.50 metres, which was enough to win the competition and just short of his personal best.

F44 Paralympic long jump silver medallist Stef Reid (Rana Reider) took third in a strong women’s long jump competition, recording a season’s best of 4.88m.

Jade Jones (Ian Thompson/Tanni Grey-Thompson) also took a good third place finish in the women’s T53/54 1500m.
