Super 8 Sayers

20 May 2009

Goldie Sayers, Britain’s top javelin athlete, has been confirmed to compete at next month’s Super8 competition to be held at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium on 10th June.

Sayers, who finished fourth at the Beijing Olympic games and currently holds the British javelin record, will compete for London North against teams representing Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, London South, Glasgow, Sheffield and Cardiff.

The exciting two-hour City versus City concept is being piloted in the Welsh capital with leading British athletes giving their full backing to the idea.

The Belgrave Harrier said: “I am looking forward to starting my season properly in Cardiff. It is a bonus for me to be able to compete in a good quality meeting on home soil before the European circuit starts.

“Hopefully the limited programme will provide some fast paced action to attract a good crowd that will no doubt spur on the athletes to produce some good performances in the build up to the World Championships"

Other confirmed athletes include: Olympic 400m hurdles bronze medallist Tasha Danvers for London South, Cardiff born home team captain Christian Malcolm and UK Indoor 800m champion Jenny Meadows as captain of Manchester. More big names will be announced in the coming days.

Earlier this week Welsh sporting icons Colin Jackson and Tanni Grey-Thompson  leant their support to the event.
