Team GB Athletes Will Compete At The Aviva London Grand Prix

15 July 2008

Forty-two out of the forty-seven athletes named in the first wave of athletes for the British team heading to this year’s Olympics have been confirmed for the Aviva London Grand Prix on July 25 and 26.

Phillips Idowu, Nicola Sanders, Christine Ohuruogu and Kelly Sotherton will be among those who will fine-tune their Olympic preparations at the Crystal Palace meeting.

Following on from an enthralling weekend of outdoor competition at the Olympic Trials in Birmingham, all eyes now switch to Crystal Palace with the British contingent joined by top international athletes from around the world including the three fastest men in history Asafa Powell, Tyson Gay and Usain Bolt.

Among those named yesterday long jumper Greg Rutherford who qualified by jumping 8.20m on Saturday, a personal best and the Olympic qualification standard, will be joining the likes of Andy Baddeley, Craig Pickering and Marlon Devonish at Crystal Palace.

Taking place over two days for the first time in 23 years, the Aviva London Grand Prix will host a spectacular send off for our British athletes on Friday 25th (17:45-20:30) and Saturday 26th (13:30-17:30) July, as they finalise their Olympic preparations in what is most likely to be their final competition before heading to Beijing.

Niels de Vos Chief Executive of UK Athletics urged the British public to come and give the athletes the send off they deserve:

“In what is set to be a fitting farewell for our athletes at the Aviva London Grand Prix, we will be treated to two days of world class athletics and I urge the British public to come and show their support before they head to Beijing.”
