The Race Is On As Summer Of World Athletics Tickets Go On Sale Today

  • 1.5 million tickets go on sale for the World ParaAthletics Championships and IAAF World Championships London 2017.
  • The biggest sporting event of 2017 will see the world’s top athletes back at The Stadium, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in London next summer.

London 2017 is the biggest global sporting event to take place next summer and will bring together 3,300 world-class athletes from more than 200 countries, who will compete in 30 sessions across 20 jam-packed and action-fuelled days.

The general public ticket ballot opens for applications today at 10.00am and closes at 20.17pm on 29 August 2016. A million tickets cost £35 or less, with tickets for adults starting from just £20 for IAAF World Championships and £10 for World ParaAthletics Championships. Child tickets for all sessions cost under £10 across both Championships.

For the first time ever, there are athlete-themed ‘World Record’ ticket prices to reflect World Records set at previous IAAF World Championships. Tickets for one session at one price point will be available for: £12.91 (Colin Jackson’s 110m hurdles), £18.29 (Jonathan Edwards’ triple jump) and £52.74 (Sally Gunnell’s 400m hurdles). All children’s tickets will be priced at £9.58 (Usain Bolt’s 100m).

IAAF President Sebastian Coe commented: “Having been delighted to attend the recent Anniversary Games which played out to superb two-day crowds in the Olympic Stadium, it’s clear that the British public have a huge appetite for world-class athletics. We want to recapture that same atmosphere next year at the IAAF World Championships 2017. The beginning of ticket sales today marks the start of the home straight for the championships and the public’s chance to watch the world’s best athletes over ten action-packed days".

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “It is fantastic that the world’s best athletes are coming to London next year in what will be an unforgettable summer of sport in the capital. London is open to visitors from around the globe and we look forward to welcoming them to the greatest city on earth to experience our world-class venues and to enjoy our amazing cultural activities.” 

World and European medallist Katarina Johnson-Thompson said: "I’ve had the chance to compete in The Stadium on several occasions and it amazes me how special the atmosphere is every time. You can’t underestimate the power of a great home crowd. The British public are so supportive and I hope they will once again come out in their thousands to support us and get to see the best athletes in the world competing next year. Dave Weir, six-time Paralympic Gold medallist and six-time World Champion said: “The fact the World ParaAthletics Championships are happening in the same city in the same summer as the IAAF World Championships for first time ever shows just how far Paralympic sport has come. Once again, the general public can watch world-class athletes in action in one of the best stadiums in the world and at really accessible prices. Like other World Championships, the British team will turn up and put on fantastic performances for the public to witness – it would mean everything to us to have a full-house cheering us on.”

London 2017 Ltd also recently announced that it had appointed Sports Travel and Hospitality (STH Live) as the exclusive provider of hospitality and VIP tickets for the World ParaAthletics Championships and the IAAF World Championships London 2017. STH Live will offer Hospitality and VIP tickets for both Championships and they will all feature the best Category A seats with Hospitality taking place pre- and post-event in function rooms located in The Stadium, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
