Trio Selected For The Iau 50km World Championships

2 October 2015

A trio of athletes have been selected for the first ever IAU 50km World Championships on Friday 4 December in Doha. The young team will head out to Qatar in two months’ time to make their debut appearances over the ultra-running distance and take on the race which consists of ten consecutive 5km loops.

Georgie Bruinvels (Mick Woods) is the sole female entrant for the British Athletics team. The Aldershot Farnham and District athlete achieved the selection time at this year’s Manchester Marathon where she won the women’s race. The clocking of 2:37.16 was a personal best for the 26 year-old who will make her maiden appearance at a ultra-running championship. She represented GB & NI at the Great Edinburgh XCountry earlier this year and will pull on the vest once more in December.

Michael Crawley (Max Coleby) and Michael Kallenberg (James Thie), 27 and 24 years old respectively, will make their international bow after enjoying swift progress in 2015. Scotland’s Crawley earned a career best of 2:19.39 over the 26.2 mile distance earlier this year. Welshman Kallenberg posted 2:19.00 at the Manchester Marathon in April and the Cardiff-based athlete will be looking forward to stepping up to the 50km distance.

The team leader Walter Hill commented: “We have selected three strong young athletes for the IAU 50km World Championships and will be looking to build upon the successes of the British Athletics team at the recent 100km Championships in the Netherlands.”
