Andy Turner (Sale Harriers Manchester) ran the fastest 110m hurdles by a UK athlete so far this season in Poland on Sunday 10 June – but reported: "I’m so annoyed with myself!" He explained after clocking 13.43 seconds for second place: "I was beating David Payne, who eventually won it in 13.38, but hit hurdle nine so hard that even he said I would’ve won if I hadn’t. We’d had five false starts as well. And I got a nice cut on my anke for my troubles. A PB is coming for sure!"

Mara Yamauchi (Harrow AC) continued her preparations for the World Championships marathon in Osaka by finishing a superb third in 32:21, behind winner Lornah Kiplagat and Kim Smith, in New York Road Runners’ New York Mini 10km on 9 June.

She reports: "The course is undulating most of the way and the weather conditions were quite tough (73° Fahrenheit and 79% humidity). Lornah Kiplagat, the defending champion, broke away from the whole field right from the start and ran alone to her fourth victory in this race. I started off feeling strong and led the second group of runners until about halfway, reached in 16:05. I found the hills and hot weather tough going in the second half and dropped slightly behind the second group, but managed to climb my way back up to third with about half a mile to go. Benita Johnson came up on to my shoulder just before the finish but I held her off by three hundredths of a second. I was really pleased to get third against a strong field, including Johnson, two-time New York Marathon winner Jelena Prokopcuka and Boston Marathon winner Grigorieva. We are now returning to Boulder for two weeks of training and then return to Japan for the Sapporo Half Marathon on 8 July."

Andrew Steele and Marilyn Okoro had fine 400m runs as UK athletes enjoyed superb conditions at the EAP meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, on Saturday night 9 June.

Steele (Trafford AC) lowered his 400m best yet again to 45.31 seconds. It earned the Power of 10 rankings leader second place, eight-hundredths of a second behind a new Irish record by David Gillick, the European Indoor champion. Martyn Rooney (Croydon Harriers), seeking race sharpness, had led to 250m before slipping to third in 46.02 while Richard Strachan (Leeds City) finished fifth in 46.78.

Okoro (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers) won the women’s 400m in 52.06 to go second in the Power of 10 rankings behind European Indoor champion Nicola Sanders. Kim Wall (Basildon) was third in 53.62 and Donna Fraser (Croydon) fourth in 53.70.

Rikki Fifton (Victoria Park Harriers and Tower Hamlets AC) went to second in the Power of 10 100m rankings with a win in a lifetime best of 10.20 seconds, well clear of two of Italy’s 4x100m squad, Jean Jacques Riparelli, second in 10.25, and Simone Collio, third in 10.26, the same time as Mark Findlay (Newham and Essex Beagles), who was placed fourth. Leon Baptiste (Enfield and Haringey) was fifth in 10.33, a big season’s best.

Ben Carne (Harrow AC) lowered his 400m hurdles best to 50.28 seconds, becoming the third man beyond the Power of 10 national standard of 50.90 this summer. He was third in a race won in 49.76 by Henri Kechi (France) – with Brad Yiend (Birchfield) fifth in a season’s best 51.49.

In the 200m (wind: -0.1), Baptiste was third in 20.84 and Fifton fifth in 21.03. Marco Cribar (Switzerland) won in 20.54. Fraser was second in the women’s final in 23.40 and Montell Douglas (Blackheath and Bromley) third in 23.79 with Kadi-Ann Thomas (Marshall Milton Keynes) fifth in 24.03.

Anyika Onuora (Liverpool Harriers) was second in the 100m in 11.49 seconds, four-hundredths behind winner Crystal Cox (USA). Douglas was third in 11.62.

Jade Johnson (Herne Hill Harriers) won the long jump with 6.44m, only a centimetre short of her season’s best.

The UK’s No.1 pole vaulters were both in action at Regensburg, Germany. Steve Lewis (Newham and Essex Beagles) cleared 5.40m at the first attempt. Kate Dennison (Sale Harriers Manchester) negotiated a difficult wind to clear 4.10.
