Uk Athletics Announce Non-executive Director Appointment

4 December 2019

UK Athletics today confirmed the appointment of Stuart Cain as a Non-Executive Director to the Board and Audit Committee.

Cain is Chief Executive at Wasps Holdings having spent the last two years looking after Wasps Rugby, Wasps Netball and the Ricoh Arena sports, conference and concert venue.

As former MD of the NEC group he oversaw The Ticket Factory and has previously worked as a Commercial Director for both Rangers Football Club and Wolverhampton Wanderers as well as Global Managing Partner, Sport & Entertainment at Mindshare/WPP plc.

He is currently the Senior Independent Director on the Rugby World Cup 2021 board, and previously chaired the London 2012 Olympic Data Legacy Committee.

The appointment was made following an open recruitment process, with the role remit requiring a specialist knowledge in commercial and financial areas.

On his appointment, Stuart Cain said:

“As we’ve recently experienced with the superb performances of our athletes at their world championships in Doha and Dubai, athletics can be inspirational at an elite level, but it’s equally important at a grass roots level as it has so many opportunities for people to get active and socialise.

“I’m looking forward to working with the Board and Executive Team on both levels and hope my background in sports marketing and commercialisation can help UK Athletics reach new audiences and create a solid, sustainable financial foundation for the sport.”

Chair of UK Athletics, Chris Clark, commented on the appointment:

“Stuart’s wide range of experience in both executive roles and non-executive capacity means we are thrilled he will be joining the board of UK Athletics at this time.

“With just eight months until the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, the sport is headed towards a significant year and his huge breadth of experience in areas such as ticketing, venues and events means he will add enormous value to the board oversight in these areas.”

A further NED appointment will be announced later this month.
