UK Athletics has today announced the appointment of Mike Whittingham as a Non-Executive Director to the board.

As a former international athlete and coach to World and Olympic medallists, Whittingham has prolific experience and in-depth understanding of elite sport, with knowledge of the British high-performance sports system. In his current role as current Director of High Performance at the Scottish Institute of Sport he has overseen successful Scottish sports performances since 2008.

Previously a Head of Technical Services and World Class Performance Advisor to UK Sport, he is also an Executive Director of sportscotland.

Whittingham – who was appointed following an open recruitment process – will join the Performance Oversight Committee and work alongside the Committee Chair Sarah Rowell in her final 18 months on the board.

Mike Whittingham commented on his appointment:

“I am delighted to be joining the Board of UK Athletics at an exciting time for the sport with Tokyo, Glasgow, Eugene, Birmingham and Paris all on the horizon. I am looking forward to adding value to the current Board and supporting Chris Clark in his new role as Chair.”

Chair of UK Athletics, Chris Clark, commented on the appointment:

“I am delighted to welcome Mike to the board of UK Athletics. In recruiting the position, we were clear we wanted a candidate with a track record of success in international athletics as an athlete, coach or official as well as knowledge of the high-performance system.

“Mike brings to the table all of these areas in abundance and we are looking forward to working with him and benefiting from his energy, insight and passion for athletics.”
