UKA has today confirmed the approach to selecting teams for next March’s major championship calendar.

With COVID still having an impact on the fixture schedule, 2025 will be a unique indoor season offering opportunities for athletes with two major indoor championships. The European Athletics Indoor Championships will take place in Apeldoorn, Netherlands 6-9 March, followed two weeks later by the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China 21-23 March.

These major championships mark the start of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic cycle, and in line with UK Sport’s investment in the World Class Programme, teams will be selected that support the strategy for future medal success in LA.

Both events offer differing competitive environments to GB & NI athletes and UKA can confirm in the policies published today how it intends to maximise those opportunities. Amongst the factors highlighted are:

• The European Athletics Indoor Championships trials will be the UK Athletics Indoor Championships, Utilita Arena Birmingham 22-23 February, focussing on top 2 finishers in the finals.
• UKA is committed to sending a strong team of athletes subject to achieving European selection standard/world ranking position, and it is UKA’s intention – subject to having realistic medal potential – to send a full relay team to the European Indoors including supporting the newly introduced mixed relay event.
• For the World Indoors there will be no trial event, and selection will take place after the European Indoors. Selection will be primarily based on World Athletics Standards and ‘Top Lists’.
• For those athletes wishing to be considered for selection for Nanjing, priority will be given in the first instance to individual Olympic and World Indoor medallists. However, UKA will not enter relay teams for Nanjing with the relay programme opting to focus on preparations for World Athletics Relay Championships in May.
