Uk Athletics Statement: Gordon Surtees

UK Athletics is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of coach Gordon Surtees on Friday 1 September.

Born in the North East and held in high-esteem by athletes and fellow coaches far and wide, Gordon was coach to a host of athletes who competed on the Olympic and World stage, with his coaching prowess seeing him coach 1:44 800m runners through to 2:11 marathoners.

In 2015 he received the British Milers’ Club lifetime achievement award for ‘Outstanding Services to Coaching’, an award indicative of the impact he has made on the sport of athletics.

Niels de Vos, Chief Executive of UK Athletics, paid tribute to Gordon, saying: “The passing of Gordon has been felt by many at UK Athletics. He was someone who put so much into the sport and was respected by so many on the back of his fine working in the coaching field.

“His legacy in athletics will live on through those he has coached both previously and currently, and the thoughts and condolences of all at UK Athletics are with his family and friends at this time.”
