UK Athletics statement on restructure of the Performance Directorate

UK Athletics has today announced a restructure of the Performance Directorate at the governing body, as part of a continuing package of measures to ensure the organisation continues to be fit for the future.

The restructure, following that undertaken of the rest of the organisation in October last year, will ensure that the Performance Directorate are best placed to support the athletes and coaches towards Tokyo 2021, whilst also taking a long-term view on the requirements of the Paris 2024 and LA 2028 cycle.

The plans that have been initiated will see a consultation process commencing today (23rd February) until 19 March 2021

UK Athletics Performance Director Sara Symington said:

“The current structure has been in place for a number of years and reflects how we have been working, rather than how we need to work in the future.  Like many sports we have encountered a huge challenge because of the impact of COVID-19 on competition and events at all levels, including the Olympics and Paralympics.

“As a result, some of our income streams have reduced and therefore there is an imperative to work more flexibly, find more efficiencies and drive down the back office costs to use our lottery funding more effectively, making sure that we are putting the athlete first in line with our new Unified Strategy with our Home Country colleagues.

“Our priority will be to ensure athletes and coaches are supported towards Tokyo and there will be a further review after the Games with a focus on coaching which will enable us to review any amends we need to make from this process.”
