Uk Sportshall Final

8 April 2013

The best athletes aged 11 to 14 who have competed in Sportshall Athletics events across the country came together for the UK final at Birmingham’s NEC on Sunday April 7th.

After GB & NI international heptathlete Jade Surman and GB & NI hurdler James Gladman, both former Sportshall participants, kicked off the day with an inspiring talk, hundreds of under 13 and under 15 athletes competed in a variety of athletics events to score points for counties from around the UK.

The under 13 girls event was won by Hampshire with a score of 1119, seven points clear of runners up Birmingham, while Greater Manchester were just a further point back. Hertfordshire were more comfortable winners of the under 13 boys category with 1166 points ahead of Avon with 1116 points and Tyne and Wear with 1044 points.

In the under 15 girls age group, a score of 1176 was enough for Norfolk to clinch victory ahead of Tyne and Wear and Birmingham. Phoebe White from Birmingham was the individual winner just two points ahead of Olivia Brough of Tyne and Wear with Jade Simson taking third.

Cardiff & Vale of Glamorgan amassed a score of 1230 to narrowly defeat Norfolk by just three points in the under 15 boys category, Surrey placed third. Norfolk did have the individual all rounder winner though as Jack Deardon scored 284 points to defeat Kristian Jones (Cardiff & Vale of Glamorgan) who was second and his Norfolk teammate Thomas Lake who was third.

Following the sad news of Jean Pickering’s death, Shaun and Kim Pickering were both in attendance as  the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund continued to show of support to Sportshall and the youngsters that are given the chance to experience competitive athletics.
