UKA STATEMENT - 05.05.22

Following some recent communications in this area, UK Athletics and the Home Country Athletics Federations can provide the following update to the sport in relation to the eligibility regulations for transgender athletes:

Since the publication of the Sports Councils’ Equality Group (SCEG) guidance for transgender inclusion in domestic sport last Autumn, a project group has been convened by UK Athletics working collaboratively with the Home Countries, to discuss and explore what the process will be for applying the guidance to athletics in the UK. We intend to communicate and provide this clarity to the sport over the next few months.

Athletics is an inclusive sport, and we currently adhere to World Athletics Eligibility Regulations for Transgender athletes for area and national championships and associated qualification events, but we are also committed to ensuring that we provide support to all athletes and operate on a case-by-case approach on a local level in a way that seeks to balance the fundamental principles of safety, inclusion and fairness.

For the time being, therefore, any specific queries about the permitted participation for transgender athletes ahead of an event can be directed either to UKA on the address below, or for matters that require more local guidance, the relevant Home Country contact (see below) where we will endeavour to provide support and guidance ahead of the working group outcome.
