UK Athletics are currently awaiting the 2023 World Athletics qualification procedures to be published, including the start and end dates of the qualification period and the qualification standards. In the meantime, in the approach to the 2022 World Athletics Championships, UKA can confirm key elements of the selection process for 2023.

The UKA marathon event philosophy is based on supporting athletes’ performance and preparation for Championships to win medals and maximise top 8 placings. The 2023 World Athletics Championships take place from 19th – 27th August 2023. As such, key dates in the selection process have been chosen to allow athletes time to focus on their preparations, and there will not be a trial event for the 2023 Championships

The selection principles subject to World Athletics qualification procedures will include:
– The first placed UK athlete at the 2022 World Championships will be automatically selected (subject to demonstrating form and fitness) if they finish within the top eight (8);
– A maximum of three athletes for both men and women, will be selected subject to meeting the aim of the UK Athletics selection policy.

Selection will be considered over two meetings on Monday March 20th & Monday April 24th 2023.

A maximum of two athletes (including the automatic selection) will be selected during the first selection meeting on March 20th 2023 if they have achieved the qualification standard and the panel believe that they have the ability to finish in the top 8 at the 2023 World Championships.

During the final selection meeting (24th April 2023), performances prior to 20th March 2023 may carry a greater performance weighting as it is deemed more likely to allow athletes adequate time to prepare and perform optimally at the 2023 World Championships.

Athletes will be selected subject to form and fitness.

UKA aim to publish the 2023 World Athletics Championships marathon selection policy by September 30th 2022.
