UKA STATEMENT: LLOYD COWAN MBE

Everyone at UK Athletics are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend Lloyd Cowan MBE. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

As an athlete Lloyd specialised in 110m and 400m hurdles, before moving into a hugely successful career in coaching where he guided a number of athletes to the top of the World. His work with Christine Ohuruogu saw her achieve 400m Olympic gold and silver in 2008 and 2012 respectively as well as two World Golds (2007 and 2013). He also guided Andy Turner to Commonwealth and European 110m hurdles titles in 2010 before a memorable world championship bronze in 2011.

A wonderful colleague, his warmth and friendship both on and off the training track made him one of the most successful, approachable and down to earth individuals involved with the sport. He brought the best out of many athletes over the years at all levels and was highly respected as a coach and mentor to many other coaches and performance staff who had the pleasure to know and work with him.

Admittedly and understandably however his proudest moment was coaching his son Dwayne, who captured world and European 4x400m relay bronze in 2017 and 2018.

Rest in peace Lloyd, from all of your friends at UK Athletics. You will be deeply missed.
