Update on the UK Athletics 5K Road Championships

UK Athletics can confirm that the UK Athletics 5K Road Championships that were scheduled to take place at the Great North Run weekend on Friday 9 September have been cancelled with a view to holding the event for the first time in 2023.

The race, which was postponed following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, was due to be organised in collaboration with the Great Run Company. The aim is that the 2023 event could act as a Trial for those vying for selection to the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the inaugural World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga, Latvia which will be held 30 September – 1 October 2023.

UKA’s Chief Operating Officer Mark Munro said:

“We appreciate there will be some disappointment that the event will not be rescheduled for this Autumn but with the approaching road relay fixtures coupled with the early stages of the cross country season we do not want to cause further disruption to the fixture scheduling.

“We’re looking forward to making next year’s event a successful start to the collaboration and thank everyone for their understanding over the decision to cancel.”
