Athletics is a great way to meet new people and develop new skills, and coaches play a fundamental part in that from inspiring and being a role model, through to keeping sessions and training activities safe.

With over 30 different events requiring several technical skills and different equipment, it is vital that coaches have a robust knowledge and understanding of different risks associated with training for the event, associated equipment and implications of both for participants and others.

With this in mind, the UKA Health & Safety Code of Practice and Training Guidance have recently been reviewed and updated guidance is are now available to coaches and participants here.

It is the responsibility of all coaches and athletes to ensure that all training sessions are conducted in a safe manner. The purpose of the Code of Practice and Training Guidance is to raise awareness and help identify the potential hazards a training session presents and examples of how to mitigate the risks of accidents and injuries occurring.

The Code of Practice and Training guidance are the backbone of our Health & Safety Duty to Care for participants in our sport, and therefore steer the minimum safe to practice education and assessment standards within our qualification programmes, and the standards of practice any insurance and/ or legal case benchmark against. Insurance does not stop people getting hurt, or damage to property occurring, and this should always be the priority of coaches and leaders.

If you have any questions about the Codes of Practice or Training Guidance, UKA will be hosting a series of Q&A webinars where members of the Coach Education and Health & Safety teams will be available to answer your questions.
