Us World Champs For Scotstoun

10 June 2010

More Olympic and World Champions are headed to Glasgow to take on Scotland’s best athletes at the Super8 athletics event on Wednesday 7 July.

With world indoor hurdles champion Lolo Jones confirmed as the international ace for Team Glasgow, a clutch of other overseas stars are lining up to be a part of a memorable night at Scotstoun.

The revamped stadium is set to  welcome world beating USA athletes Allen Johnson and Lauryn Williams who have signed up for the action-packed two hour competition.

Johnson, is the former Olympic and four time world champion over the 110m hurdles. In competing for Birmingham’s Super8 side, Johnson will be hoping to take maximum points for his adopted city.

“I love the idea of competing at Super8 next month,” said Johnson. “Not only do I get to compete at Glasgow’s Scotstoun stadium and their brilliant sports fans, but competing for Birmingham brings me full circle.

“It was Birmingham where I took my second World Indoor hurdles title back in 2003, and it was a truly sweet victory that year! I can still hear the roar of the crown from the National Indoor Arena – but I know from first- hand experience having competed there that Scotstoun will be even louder and a brilliant night to remember. “

The diminutive Williams is the former world 100m champion and will compete for Cardiff, hoping to help the Welsh team take a double sprint victory:

“Super8 is shaping up to be a great competition and I can’t wait to take on the other cities, especially Glasgow with 5000 home supporters.

“It’s a great format athletics competition and I love the way it combines international athletes with the best from across the UK.

“As a former world junior champion I would hope I could encourage the youngsters in my Cardiff team to really step up on what will be a big night for them. And working with the Cardiff team captain Christian Malcolm will be great.

“Not only are we looking to take a double win over 100m, as a fellow former world junior champion he will be a brilliant leader for our side and we’re looking to cause a real upset against the other teams on the night!”

Other top athletes already confirmed for the competition include Olympic 400m hurdles bronze medallist Tasha Danvers, World Indoor hurdles champion Lolo Jones (USA) and World Long Jump champion Dwight Phillips (USA); Olympic javelin fourth placer Goldie Sayers; World Indoor silver medallist Chris Tomlinson, Olympic long jump finallist Jade Johnson, GB 4x400m star Victoria Barr; World 800m bronze medallist Jenny Meadows, and World Indoor 4x400m relay medallist Richard Buck.
