07 August 2012

Steve Vernon (coach: Dave Turnbull) and Victoria Wilkinson were clear winners of the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland team trial for the World Mountain Running Championships (uphill only) to be held at Ponte di Legno, Italy on Sunday 2 September.

While Vernon was unchallenged in the 11.8km men’s race (1010m climb/250m descent) at Glenridding on Sunday 5 August – race three of the McCain Mountain Running Challenge – which he won in 55.46, Kate Goodhead (Chris Frapwell) set the early pace in the women’s race only to be overhauled by eventual winner Wilkinson (40.11) in the final steep section of the 6.5km race/710m climb.

Annabel Mason, the European Champion, won the junior women’s 4km race (310m climb) by nearly two minutes in 19:43 from Mel Hyder, the athlete she had teamed up with to win silver medals for the British team at the European Championships last month.

Brad Traviss of Calder Valley won the junior men’s 6.5km race (710m climb)  in 37:42.
