Walters Passes Away

11 August 2013

British Athletics learnt yesterday of the sad passing of sprint coach Roger Walters, who lost his eighteen month battle with cancer.

At the age of just 64, Walters achieved a remarkable amount in his coaching career, namely guiding the women’s 4x100m relay team to silver at the 2006 European Championships. In his younger days, Walters was an international sprinter himself, competing at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. He was also part of the GB & NI coaching team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

His most recent star is Annabelle Lewis, who is currently in Moscow preparing for the 4x100m relay, where she is a key part of the GB & NI quartet. Lewis recorded a personal best of 11.36 and finished second at the Sainsbury’s British Championships last month, and commented on twitter:

“Devastated to say my amazing coach Roger Walters has passed away. I’m so blessed to have worked with such a committed, knowledgeable, talented man, who has coached/mentored me to a world standard – I’ll be forever grateful!”
