Way And Zakrzewski Headline Iau 100km World Championships Team

4 June 2015

Last year’s world 100km bronze medallist Jo Zakrzewski and Commonwealth Games marathoner Steve Way will headline the Great Britain & Northern Ireland team heading out to the Netherlands for the IAU World 100km Championships on Saturday 12 September.

After collecting two team and two individual medals at the championships in Doha last year, the GB & NI squad will be targeting further success over the demanding circuit in Winschoten.

Zakrzewski will lead the women’s team as they seek to defend their team gold from Qatar. The Dumfries athlete took the individual world bronze medal in a time of 7:42.02 on a successful day for the female ultra-runners. She will be joined on this occasion by Sue Harrison (Les Barnett), who also claimed bronze at the IAU European 100km Championships in 2013 and Holly Rush.

Paul Giblin, Craig Holgate and Way will return to the men’s team which won bronze in 2014. Giblin was the first Briton back in 11th last time with Way 13th and Holgate 16th contributing to the silverware success.

The trio will be joined by Scottish Commonwealth Games marathoner Ross Houston who won the Anglo-Celtic plate 100km last month in a time of 6:43:35, and Marcus Scotney completes the strong senior men’s team heading to the Dutch city.

Walter Hill, the Team Leader said:

“This strong team will aim to build on the success of the GB & NI achievements at the last World Championships in Doha.

“I believe we are very much on a wave of success in ultra-running disciplines and that is demonstrated in the eight-strong team we are sending to Winschoten.”
