WCPP 2013-14ANNOUNCEMENT NEXT WEEK

7 October 2013

The athletes invited on to the British Athletics World Class Performance Programme (WCPP) for 2013-14 is to be announced next week.

The WCPP is UK Sport’s National Lottery funded initiative to support the delivery of success at the world’s most significant sporting events, principally the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

UK Sport’s mantra for the 2016 Rio cycle is supporting athletes with realistic medal winning capabilities at the next Olympic/Paralympic Games. In line with this, the core principle for WCPP 2013-14 is medallists rather than finalists.

The aim of the Olympic WCPP is to win medals at the Olympic Games, whilst the Paralympic programme is focused on Gold medals. The WCPP is structured to reflect these overall aims, as well as supporting the longer term growth of the sport, and the need to achieve sustained success in Tokyo and beyond.

This week British Athletics is conducting its annual review and a selection panel will assess whether athletes should be granted funding for the following year. The funding year for the WCPP runs from 1 December to the end of November each year.
