In an action packed weekend there was a UK record from Kate Dennison and a return to top form from Andy Baddeley.

Midland Counties Indoor Open, Birmingham, Alexander Stadium 24 January

In the men’s events Robbie Grabarz (Newham & Essex Beagles) took the victory in the high jump on countback with a leap of 2.21m which was equalled by runner-up Tom Parsons (Birchfield) with Adam Scarr (Enfield & Haringey) close behind in third with 2.19m. In the long jump JJ Jegede (Newham & Essex Beagles) recorded 7.40m and in the triple jump Ben Williams (City of Stoke U20) leapt to 15.37m. In the women’s high jump Jessica Leach (Birchfield) won with 1.78m with Louise Hazel (Birchfield) recording 1.70m for third place.

Ashley Gilder (Notts U17) through a life-time best of 55.07m in the U17 Hammer.

In the men’s 60m Leon Baptiste (Enfield & Haringey) took the victory in r2 with 6.73 from Tim Abeyie (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies) 6.75. In the women’s 60m Bernice Wilson (Birchfield) finished first with 7.40 with Louise Hazel (Birchfield) in third with 7.63.

Thomas Bridge (Amber U17) through a life-time best of 39.95 in the U17 discus.

Cherry and Silver Invitational, Albuquerque NM, USA 23 January

Lee Emmanuel (City of Sheffield) finished third in the 800m with a time of 1:50.92.

Moravian Tour, Hustopece, CZE 23 January

In the high jump Samson Oni (Belgrave) continued his impressive form with a clearance of 2.28m for fifth place.

New Balance Games, New York NY, USA 23 January

Andy Baddeley (Harrow) bounced back to form with victory over one mile in 3:55.64 from Ricky Stevenson (New Marske U23) 3:56.31 which was a lifetime best and close behind in third place was Mark Draper (Bedford & County) 3:56.80, also a pb. Baddeley’s time was just short of the meeting record of 3:54.98 belonging to Irishman Mark Caroll.

Razorback Invitational, Fayetteville AR, USA 23 January

In the men’s 3000m Tom Farrell (Border U20) finished in second place in a lifetime best of 8:02.18 with John Beattie (Winchester) finishing in fifth in 8:09.80 also recording his best-ever performance. In the women’s events former GB International Joice Maduaka (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies) competed over 400m for the first time and recorded a respectable 55.45 for third place.

Stavhoppskarnevalen (Pole-vault Carnival), Gothenburg, SWE 23 January

In the men’s pole vault (ns) Samuel Adams (Victoria Park City of Glasgow U17) recorded a life-time best of 3.75m which added 11cms to last year’s performance.

Welsh Senior Indoor Championships, Cardiff 23 January

In the men’s 60m hurdles Chris Baillie (Birchfield) took the victory in 7.82 from Lawrence Clarke (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow U23) 7.88. Gemma Turtle (Gloucester) won the 1500m in 4:14.06 from Rose-Anne Galligan (Gloucester) 4:16.28. In the pole vault Henrietta Paxton (Birchfield) won with a PB 4.31m.

Internationales Wuppertaler Springermeeting, Wuppertal, Germany 22 January

Kate Dennison (Sale Harriers) continued where she finished last winter and summer with yet another UK indoor record of 4:57m which is yet another step towards world-class. The performance was a huge improvement on her previous mark of 4.49m set last March. She said after the event: “I am surprised that it worked today, but there’s just a great atmosphere at this event.” The performance was just short of her outdoor record of 4.60m set last September in Szczecin, Poland.

Gladstein Invitational, Bloomington IN, USA 22 January

Darren Gauson (Edinburgh) won the men’s mile in 4:04.49 from Rob Mullett (Lewes) 4:05.32. Scott Overall (Blackheath & Bromley) took the men’s 3000m in 7:51.36.

Hokie Invitational, Blacksburg VA, USA 22 January

In the 60m Amy Harris (Birchfield) finished third in heat one of the 60m in 7.60 and also third in the triple jump with 12.58.

Niswonger Invitational & KTC HS Invite, Johnson City TN, USA 22 January

In the 60m Natalie Pearson (City of Sheffield) finished in fourth place with 7.63 in heat one.

Razorback Invitational, Fayetteville AR, USA 22 January


In the women’s 200m Joice Maduaka (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies) finished third in 23.77.

In the men’s pole-vault Jax Thoirs (Victoria Park City of Glasgow U20) finished first in a life-time best of 4.65m.
