EUROPEAN CUP 10,000M, RIBEIRA BRAVA, MADEIRA, 6 JUNE

Five athletes will represent the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team at this weekend’s European Cup 10,000m in Ribeira Brava, Madeira. The event has been identified as a key opportunity for British athletes to compete against international opposition in quality men’s and women’s races.

The women’s team consists of English National Cross Country champion Hatti Dean (Hallamshire Harriers), Gemma Miles (Kendal) and Claire Hallissey (Bristol & West). 27 year old Dean, who finished 2nd at the recent BUPA London 10,000m road race will be making her track debut over the 25 lap distance. On the men’s side, Phil Wicks (Belgrave Harriers) and Phil Nicholls (Tipton) will don GB & NI vests after some fine recent outings on the roads.

EAP MEETING, GENEVA, SWITZERLAND, 6 JUNE

Dozens of British athletes will compete in Geneva, including the men’s and women’s 4x100m squads as they begin their competitive build-up to August’s World Championships in Berlin.

Individually, the men’s 100m will see Olympic semi-finalist Tyrone Edgar (Newham & Essex), Craig Pickering (Marshall Milton Keynes), Mark Lewis Francis (Birchfield Harriers) and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Sutton & District) amongst the runners. The men’s 200m sees Olympic finalist Christian Malcolm (Cardiff AAC) and Marlon Devonish (Coventry Godiva) in the starting line-up.

The men’s 400m has entries from Richard Buck (Leeds Met) and World Youth champion Chris Clarke (Marshall Milton Keynes). On the women’s side, the 100m sees Anyika Onuora (Liverpool Harriers), UK record holder Montell Douglas (Blackheath & Bromley), Laura Turner (Harrow AC) and World junior silver medallist Ashlee Nelson (City of Stoke) amongst the entries.

The 200m has World 400m silver medallist Nicola Sanders (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) and Olympic 200m semi-finalist Emily Freeman (Wakefield Harriers) in the entries. The women’s 400m starting list includes Lee McConnell (Shaftesbury Barnet), Vicki Barr (Rugby & Northampton), Donna Fraser (Croydon Harriers) and Marilyn Okoro (Shaftesbury Barnet).

Rising stars Perri Shakes-Drayton (Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets) and Meghan Beesley (Birchfield Harriers) will contest the women’s 400m hurdles, whilst in the field Olympic triple jumper Nathan Douglas (Oxford City) represents British interest.

PREFONTAINE CLASSIC, EUGENE, USA, 7 JUNE

GB & NI’s Olympic high jump silver medallist Germaine Mason jumps straight in at the deep end for his first competition of 2009. He will face Olympic gold and bronze medallists Andrei Silnov and Yaroslav Rybakov (both Russia) and World Champion Donald Thomas (Bahamas) in a stellar field.

55TH JANUSZ KUSOCINSKI MEMORIAL, WARSAW, POLAND, 7 JUNE

Olympic 4th placer Lisa Dobriskey (Ashford AC), World junior champion Stephanie Twell (Aldershot, Farnham & District) and Charlene Thomas (Wakefield Harriers) will clash in the women’s 1500m. Samson Oni (Belgrave Harriers), Nathan Morgan (Birchfield Harriers) and Will Sharman (Belgrave Harriers) are entered for the men’s high jump, long jump and 110m hurdles respectively.
