BUCS Championships, Bedford 1-3 May (Final Day)

The men’s 5000m final was a slow run affair with Nick Goolab (Belgrave) taking the title in a pedestrian 14:40.19 from Rory Chesser (Ennis Track) 14:43.39 and Stephen Emery (Coventry) 14:54.96.

In the 400m hurdles Niall Flannery (Gateshead) mastered the blustery conditions to take the victory in 52.73 from Simon Merrill (Team Bath) 53.17 and Steven Garrett (City of Sheffield) 53.39. The 400m was won by Luke Lennon (Birchfield) in 47.48 from Richard Davenport (Gloucester) 47.72 and Benjamin Higgins (Newham & Essex Beagles) 48.43.

The 3000m steeplechase was won by Ben Nagy (Enfield & Haringey) in 9:15.79 from Tom Wade (Aldershot, Farnham & District) 9:17.72 and Sam Bradley (Tonbridge) 9:23.55. The 200m was won by Sven Knipphals (Bournemouth) in 21.31 from Harvey Byrne (Newham & Essex Beagles) 21.52 and Umar Hameed (Leeds City) 21.59. Paul Goodall (City of Norwich) took the 800m title in a slow run race 1:56.10 from Tom Marley (Bristol & West) 1:56.24 and Kieran Flannery (Gateshead) 1:56.52. James Shane (Newham & Essex Beagles) took the 1500m tile in 3:50.50 from Jonathan Taylor (Morpeth) 3:50.74 and James Wilkinson (Leeds City) 3:51.64.

The 110m hurdles was won in convincing fashion by Lawrence Clarke (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) in 13.85 from Joseph Hylton (Birchfield) 14.70 and David Feeney (Amber Valley) 14.80.

The javelin was won by James Campbell (Cheltenham) with a throw of 76.65m and Matthew Hunt (Sale Harriers Manchester) threw 69.84m for second and Matt Smith (Exeter) 69.54m for third. In the women’s 400m hurdles Meghan Beesley (Birchfield) had an easy victory clocking 58.42 with Justine Kinney (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) taking the silver medal in 60.59 and Caryl Granville (Carmarthen) the bronze in a time of 61.41.

In the 400m Perri Shakes-Drayton (Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets) strode to a CBP with a 52.98 clocking from Sarah Adams (Leicester) 54.99 and Emma Pullen (Shrewsbury) 55.32. Alison Leonard (Blackburn) took the 800m title in 2:09.24 from Rose-Anne Galligan (Gloucester) 2:09.58 and Ejiro Okoro (Birchfield) 2:11.17. Emma Pallant (Aldersgot, Farnham & District) took the 5000m title in 16:43.35 from Kirsty Milner (Trafford) 16:45.73 and Cathy Ansell (Telford) 16:48.28.

The 200m was won by Margaret Adeoye (Enfield & Haringey) 23.90 from Mica Nottingham (Liverpool) 24.57 and Rebecca Williams (Newport) 24.69. The 1500m was won by Morag MacLarty (Central) 4:20.24 from Emily Pidgeon (Stroud) 4:22.43 and Emma Jackson (City of Stoke) 4:24.03. Zara Hohn (Wakefield) took the 100m hurdles title in 13.75 from Lauren Dewdney (Gateshead) 13.96 and Serita Solomon (Blackheath & Bromley) 13.99.

The 2000m steeplechase was won by Laura Parker (Wells City) 6:58.65 from Sarah Hood (Edinburgh) 7:03.74 and Aiya Abe 7:15.44. Pamela Hughes (Westport) took the high jump title with a clearance at 1.78m from Karla Drew (Exeter) 1.69m and Lucinda Logan (Victoria Park City of Glasgow) 1.69m. BMC PB Classic, Street 3 May
Highlights from the annual middle distance extravaganza at Millfield School included: Gareth Warburton (Cardiff) winning the ‘A’ 800m in 1:49.73 with Sam Petty (North Devon U20) taking second in 1:51.49. Georgia Peel (Aldershot, Farnham & District U17) winning the ‘A’ 800m in 2:07.05 from Leigh Lennon (Newham & Essex Beagles U20) 2:09.03. In the men’s ‘A’ 1500m Jonathan Hay (Aldershot, Farnham & District U20) took the victory in 3:48.46 from Tom Curr (Stroud U20) 3:52.68 and Charlie Grice (Phoenix U17) 3:54.36. The women’s ‘A’ 1500m was won by Ciara Dullaghan (Aldershot, Farnham & District U20) 4:34.29 and in seventh place was Loren Bleaken (Team Bath U15) 4:39.60. Steve Scott Invitational, Irvine CA, USA 2 May

In the men’s events Rion Pierre (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) finished in second place in round one of the 100m clocking 10.38 (-0.2) with Jeffrey Lawal-Balogun (Kent) in third place 10.43. In round two Toby Sandeman (Thames Valley Harriers) finished in first place 10.43 (1.2) with Elijah Winn (Enfield & Haringey) in fifth place 10.73. In the 200m Jeffrey Lawal-Balogun (Kent) finished in second place in round one 20.85 (0.5) with Rion Pierre (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) in fourth spot 20.98 and Elijah Winn (Enfield & Haringey) seventh 21.54. In round two Andrew Robertson (Sale Harriers Manchester) clocked 21.80 (1.9). In the 110m hurdles Alex Al-Ameen (NEwham & Essex Beagles) finished second in round one 13.98 (1.4) with Gianni Frankis (Newham & Essex Beagles) second in 14.06. In the discus Carl Myerscough (Blackpool, Wyre & Fylde) finished in first place with a throw of 60.77m. In the women’s events Anike Shand-Whittingham (Blackheath & Bromley) finished in fifth place in round one of the 100m 11.89 (1.5) with Victoria Barr (Rugby & Northampton) in sixth place 11.90. Big East Championships, Cincinnati OH, USA 2 May

Horizon League Championships, Lisle IL, USA 2 May

Kris Gauson (Edinburgh) finished in second place in the 800m clocking 1:51.85 while in the women’s events Kirsty Legg (Middlesbrough Mandale) won her round of the 1500m in 4:28.14 with Katie Clark (Kingston upon Hull U20) third in 4:34.43. Marbeth Shiell (Edinburgh) finished in second place the 5000m in a time of 17:35.37 with Rose Edwards (Rotherham) seventh in 18:04.07 and Sara Bird (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies) eighth in 18:10.71. www.thepowerof10.info/

McCain UK Young Athletes League – Blackpool

Pole vaulter Katie Byres (Sale) broke her own British All Time u17 record for the second time in a week and third time this year with 4.03m at the McCain YAL meeting in Blackpool. Byres began her year in great form setting an indoor U17 British record of 4.01m in Birmingham at the Aviva England U15 / U17 / U20 Championships in February. She increased that to 4.02m on the 25th April before adding a centimetre at the weekend for an outdoor age group best. The 16 year old now sits in sixth position on the UK senior rankings.

McCain UK Young Athletes League Midland 1 NE, Milton Keynes 2 May
Highlights were: Armani James (Leicester Coritanian U17) 13.07 in the triple jump. Forrest Francis (Leicester Coritanian U17) 41.39m in the shot. Travelle Morris-Reid (Leicester Coritanian U17) 54.12m in the javelin. www.thepowerof10.info/

Highlights were: Cameron Dixon (Oswestry U17) 60.50 in the 400m hurdles. Thomas Fellowes (Hereford U15) 39.96m in the hammer. Highlights from the men’s events were: Julian Thomas (Birchfield) 10.7 in the 100m and 21.5 in the 200m. Chris Shorthouse (Notts) 65.71m in the hammer, Brett Byrd (City of Stoke) 67.38m and Charlie Stocks (Charnwood U20) 57.39m in the javelin. In the women’s events there was a sprint double for Chelsea Cooper (City of Stoke) 11.8 in the 100m and 24.4 in the 200m.
