BMC Grand Prix, Watford, 11 June
Calli Thackery (coach: Nigel Brookes, club: Rotherham) ran inside the world championships 5000m qualifying standard for the second time this season after a sterling performance at the British Milers Club GP in Watford.
It was a race she dominated as she won by over 16 seconds in the end, clocking 15:06.26. Samantha Harrison (Vince Wilson, Charnwood) was the next across the line and she achieved a European qualifying standard with a time of 15:22.29 which was also a personal best.
Elsewhere, a trio of athletes claimed World U20 Championships qualifying times. Ethan Hussey (Andrew Henderson, Leeds City) did so in the men’s 800m as he recorded a time of 1:47.88. Osian Perrin (Andrew Walling, Menai) and Johnny Livingstone (Exeter) were both inside the men’s 5000m standard with times of 13:49.26 and 13:51.03 respectively.
AthletiCAGeneve EAP – World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze, Geneva, Switzerland, 11 June
Zoey Clark (Ryan Oswald, Thames Valley) and Ama Pipi (Marco Airale, Enfield & Haringey) both ran inside the world standard for 400m at the meeting in Geneva. Clark did so for the first time, going second in the 2022 UK rankings with 51.22, a PB for the Scottish athlete. Pipi ran a season best of 51.31 for fourth in the same race.
In another 400m race, Laviai Nielsen (Enfield & Haringey) ran inside the European Championships qualifying standard with a time of 51.70.
There were European qualifying times for Joe Brier (Matt Elias, Swansea) and Chris McAlister (Marina Armstrong, Thames Valley) in the men’s 400m and 400m hurdles respectively.
Brier, who was selected to represent Team Wales at the Commonwealth Games, ran a PB of 45.56 over the 400m flat. Meanwhile, McAlister posted a SB of 49.36 to dip under the standard for Munich.
Also, in the 400m hurdles, in a separate men’s race Jacob Paul (Marina Armstrong, Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow) and Seamus Derbyshire (Nick Dakin, City of Stoke) also ran solid races as they clocked 49.62.
Hayley McLean (Chris Zah, Shaftesbury Barnet) continued her good form as she ran another European qualifying standard in the women’s 400m hurdles; the time 55.62.
Elsewhere, in the women’s 100m hurdles, Jessica Hunter (Scott Grace, Shaftesbury Barnet) consolidated her spot as UK number two in the event as she ran a PB of 13.12 (1.2) and a wind-assisted 13.09 (2.1).
Sollentuna GP – World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze, Sollentuna, Sweden, 12 June
Ben Pattison (Dave Ragan, Basingstoke & Mid Hants) moved inside the world, European and Commonwealth Games (England) qualifying standard in the men’s 800m in Sweden, clocking a personal best of 1:45.16 to win. Daniel Rowden (Matt Yates, Woodford Green Essex Ladies) was third in the race in another solid time of 1:45.84.
Elsewhere, Lily Beckford (Linford Christie, Shaftesbury Barnet) ran a PB in the women’s 400m, setting a time of 52.58.
Portland Track Festival – World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze, Portland Oregon, USA, 10-11 Jun 22
Sarah Inglis (Lothian) smashed her personal best as she ran inside the World Championships qualifying standard for the first time. Competing on the track where the worlds will be taking place in July, she ran a time of 15:05.51 to go third in the 2022 UK rankings.
Elsewhere, Patrick Dever (Andy Bibby, Preston) and Marc Scott (Jerry Schumacher, Richmond and Zetland) were both inside the European championships qualifying standards once again in separate 5000m races. Dever ran 13:20.12 and Scott cross the line in 13:22.15.
NCAA DI Championships, Eugene, Oregon, USA, 8-11 June
Joshua Zeller (Adrian Brown) continued his impressive 2022 season with a third-place finish in the 110m hurdles at the NCAAs. In a race won in a then world lead of 13.00 by USA’s Trey Cunningham, Zeller ran 13.26 for the podium spot. The Bracknell athlete has already run a UK leading time of 13.19 last month, so is in superb form. Tade Ojara (Caryl Smith-Gilbert, WSEH) was eighth in the final in a time of 13.58.
Elise Thorner (Wells City) finished fifth in the women’s 3000m steeplechase after crossing the line in a time of 9:33.99.
Welsh Athletics Senior and U15 Championships, Cardiff, 12 June
Michael Jenkins (Ryan Spencer-Jones, Pembrokeshire) threw a world and European F38 discus record of 55.92m (subject to ratification). He had improved his best at the WPA GP in Paris a couple of days prior to the competition in Cardiff with a best of 52.48m, but with an extra 3.5 metres added, he set the world record mark.
Also in the men’s discus, Nick Percy (Zane Duquemin, Shaftesbury Barnet) extended his Scottish record with a best of 64.95m, while Harrison Walsh (Swansea) threw his third PB in a week with his furthest throw measuring at 55.94m.
Gouden Spike, Leiden, Netherlands, 11 June
Sam Atkin (Mike Collins, Lincoln Wellington) was narrowly outside the world 10,000m standard with a time of 27:33.52 as he won the race in the Netherlands, but he was inside the European standard once again. Jake Smith (Cardiff) was also inside the mark for Munich with his time of 28:14.10.
Meeting National à thème de Clermont-Ferrand, Aubiere, France, 11 June
The women’s hammer throwers continued to impress at a highly competitive meeting in France. Katie Head (Paul Head, Newham and Essex Beagles) won with a best throw of 69.68m which was just four centimetres off her PB, while Charlotte Payne (Paul Dickenson, Reading) was second with 69.27m.
