Weekend Round Up

05 July 2010

A large contingent from the UK were in action last weekend with Sunday marking the deadline for European Championship qualifiers to be set. Highlights included a superb PB for Laura Turner and Seasons bests across the board for other athletes.

La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland, July 4

There were some sensational sprint times in near perfect conditions. Riding a just legal 2mps wind, Aviva Trials winner Laura Turner (Coach Linford Christie) went to the fore of the top levels of European sprinting (and the head of Power of Ten) with a big personal best 100m victory in 11.11, way inside the UKA A standard for Barcelona of 11.30.

Elaine O’Neill bettered the B standard with a personal best 11.39.

In the 200 metres, Hayley Jones won in a personal best of 23.33 which just missed the UKA B standard of 23.30.  Turner set a season’s best of  23.42.

The Aviva European Trials winner Christian Malcolm ran his fastest time since the Beijing Olympics with a 20.50 200m victory, comfortable inside the UKA A standard of 20.59. Jeffrey Lawal-Balogan (Clarence Callander) also bettered that mark with 20.52 in finishing a close second.

Lawal Balogan also set a personal best and B qualifying mark in the 100m of 10.27 when he was third in his heat. He was faster still in the final with 10.21 – equal to the A standard but the wind was an agonizing just over the limits of 2.1. The winner of that race and returning to form was Mark Lewis Francis (Linford Christie). There he timed 10.14 after setting a B standard of 10.26 in his heat.

Over 400m Robert Tobin (Todd Bennett) ran a season’s best of 45.74 to finish third, well under the B standard of 45.95.

At 400m hurdles Rhys Williams (Malcolm Arnold), who sits second in the European rankings for 2010 (to David Greene) with his 49.28 clocking from Ostrava, was again well inside the B standard of 49.80 with a 49.53 victory but again still short of the A standard of 49.25. Nathan Woodward (Nick Dakin) was also inside the B standard with 49.77 in second while David Hughes (Steve Hughes) in 49.87, narrowly missed out.

In the women’s 400m there was a personal best and second place for Victoria Barr (Ayo Falola) in 52.40, which was just outside the B standard of 52.30. The 800m specialist Marilyn Okoro (Ayo Falola) reminded the relay team selectors of her one-lap prowess with her third in 52.46 while former World Championships runner-up Nicola Sanders (Tony Lester) was fourth in 52.78.

The European long jump silver medallist Greg Rutherford (Dan Pfaff) won with a windy 7.92 and had a legal 7.67 leap.

Madrid, Spain, July 2

The failure of the electrical timing system together with winds just over the limit frustrated athletes chasing qualifying times.

Aviva Trials 110m hurdles winner Will Sharman (George Maciukiewicz) has no such qualifying worries and he sped to a sensational hand time of 12.9. The wind was only just over the limits at 2.3mps and compares more than favourably with his best of the year of 13.30.

Marlon Devonish (Tony Lester) won the 200m in 20.4 with a 2.1mps wind.

In the 1500m Tom Lancashire (Norman Poole) in second with 3:37.3 and Nick McCormick (Lindsay Dunn) in sixth in 3:38.9 both bettered the UKA B standard of 3:39.20.

However he was well inside the Welsh  qualifying time of 1:48.0 for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
