Weekend Round Up

On the penultimate weekend of track and field events, many British athletes were making their final appearances of the season while many were just getting started as the cross country season got underway in North America. Here are the results from a busy week of action for the British athletes. 

BMC Track Festival 10,000m, Stretford, September 6

Olympic marathoner Scott Overall (coach: Alan Storey) won in a PB 29:18.39 at the BMC track festival in Stretford of the weekend as he prepares for the Berlin marathon in just under three weeks.

Lobo Invitational, Albuquerque, September 6

Calli Thackery (Aaron Thomas) won the women’s race in 18:05.04, just two hundredths of a second ahead of Alice Wright (David Walker).

Another New Mexico University student Jake Shelley (David Chalfen) was third in the men’s race in 15:18.90 behind two Kenyan athletes.

IAAF World Challenge, Rieti, Italy, September 7

Rabah Yousif (Carol Williams) ran the fastest 300m by a Briton this year with a fifth place in 32.31, which leaves him just outside the UK all-time top ten.

Nigel Levine (Linford Christie) finished eighth in 32.98 to go second in the UK rankings for this rarely run event.

Anyika Onuora (Rana Reider) was fifth in the 400m in 51.76 and Richard Yates (Stephen Ball) finished fourth in the 400m hurdles in 50.46 in Italy.

Lee Valley Sprints Evening, September 3

England’s Commonwealth Games 200m representative, Chris Clarke (Steve Fudge) won the 200m in 20.59/0.5.

Zagreb, Croatia, September 2

European champion Martyn Rooney (Rana Reider) won over 400m in 45.49, defeating African champion Isaac Makwala. GB & NI’s 4x400m squad member Rabah Yousif (Carol Williams) finished fourth in 45.81.

Chijindu Ujah (Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) finished fourth in the 100m in 10.26/-0.7. Commonwealth and European silver medallist in the 200m, Jodie Williams (Christine Bowmaker) finished third in the women’s 200m.

Tiffany Porter (Reider) was a close third in the women’s 100m hurdles in 13.01/-0.8. European and Commonwealth silver medallist William Sharman (Jerzy Maciukiewicz) has had a marvellous consistent season but had a rare off-day and finished seventh in 13.77/-0.8.

Hannah England (Bud Baldaro) was seventh in the women’s 1500m in 4:07.22.

British record holder Isobel Pooley (Fayyaz Ahmed) finished fourth in the high jump with 1.85m.

Roverto, Italy, September 2

Chris Tomlinson finished second in the long jump with 7.95m/1.7 in Italy.

European 100m bronze medallist Ashleigh Nelson (Michael Afilaka) finished third in the 100m in 11.30/0.7 in her penultimate race of the season.

UK School Games, Manchester, September 5

English Schools 800m champion Daniel Rowden (Richard Thurston) won the under-17 800m in a PB 1:52.35 to go second in the Power of Ten rankings.

Another ESAA winner William Battershill won the 1500 metre steeplechase in a PB of 4:15.38 to go top of the Power of ten rankings.  Jake Norris (Paul Dickenson) who has dominated the under-17 hammer all season added over a metre to his PB to go top of the Power of Ten rankings with a throw of 69.32m.

Amy Herrington (Dickenson) won the women’s hammer with a throw of 56.58m to go top of the women’s rankings.
